Meera is an Associate in the State Taxes team. 

Prior to joining Sladen Legal, Meera worked at global Big 4 professional services firm EY, global mid-tier professional services firm BDO and Australian top tier law firm Clayton Utz.

Her work has been published by global publications including Bloomberg Law (Daily Tax Report) and Thomson Reuters (Practical Law) as well as Australian publications including The Tax Institute’s Journal (Taxation in Australia).  She has also attended tax policy consultation meetings facilitated by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), State Revenue Office Victoria (SRO) and Board of Taxation.

She assists clients with:

  • providing tax planning and structuring advice with respect to proposed acquisitions as well as historical transactions, including on the use of trusts;

  • reviewing and assisting in the drafting of transaction documents to reduce the risk of unintended adverse outcomes;

  • preparing reasonably arguable position papers and requesting private rulings from the ATO and SRO;

  • complying with and managing lodgement and payment obligations, including making appropriate nominations and notifications with the SRO;

  • defending positions during reviews, investigations, and audits by the ATO and SRO, including preparing voluntary disclosures and responding to information requests;

  • applying for remission of penalties and interest with objections; and

  • representing clients in litigation in tribunals and courts, disputing primary tax liability and/or penalties.

Meera’s principal areas of practice include:

  • State taxes and duties (land transfer (stamp) duty, land tax, landholder duty, foreign surcharges, windfall gains tax, motor vehicle taxes, gambling taxes and the congestion levy)

  • State employment taxes (payroll tax);

  • Federal employment taxes (superannuation guarantee);

  • Superannuation (self managed superannuation funds); and

  • CGT and CGT on property transactions.
